Often, people come into their driving lessons not quite knowing what to expect. Of course, the actual driving part is why you get driving lessons, but there are things that you can learn about without paying for a driving lesson. See below a list of questions we commonly get asked, and hopefully you can get some things cleared up too...

In no particular order...

When do you think I will be ready for my test?

This will be a different date for every single pupil. At RPM Driving School, our aim isn't just to get you to a level to pass a driving test though, it's to get you ready for driving for the rest of your life.

Will we go on the motorway on our driving lessons?

Yes, we will. As your lessons will be conducted with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in a car that has dual controls, then you will be able to go on the motorway on your driving lessons. IMPORTANT to remember though... If you're doing a lesson with a family member who isn't an ADI and doesn't have dual controls fitted to thier car, then you won't be allowed on the motorway on that lesson. It's also worth mentioning, thats whilst motorway driving isn't currently on the driving test, it's still a valuable skill and experience to have ready for when you hit the roads on your own.

Should I practice my Theory now, or when I start doing driving lessons?

Start learning your theory as soon as you can. If you've already done some revision on the theory before your start your driving lessons, then you're already setting yourself up for success.

Here's a link to "Driving Test Success 4-in-1 App". It's a great app to use, and can link directly with the "MyDriveTime" pupil app you'll use alongside our lessons too.

How many driving lessons do I need?

This is probably the most commonly asked question, and it kind of links in with the one at the top of this list. Everyone is different, and everyone learns and picks things up at different rates. Also worth noting, that everyone will find different parts of driving more challenging than others. Important not to compare yourself or your progress to friends or family, as we all have different experiences on the roads.

There is however, an average time that it takes for pupils to be ready to pass a driving test...

Lessons from an Approved Driving Instructor - 44+ Hours

Own private practice (In own car and accompanied by someone suitable) - 22+ Hours

The GOV.UK website actually states, "There’s no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise driving".

How long is each lesson?

Usually our lessons are 2 hours long. This allows you to get more out of your lesson, and progress quicker than just doing a 1 hour lesson. 1 hour lessons are available on request and if suitable with the instructor though as we understand not everyone has the budget, or time.

"I live on a big hill. Will I have to drive on it at the start of the first lesson?"

You might be please to see that the answer is no. If it's your very first lesson, then your instructor will drive you to a more suitable area for learning the basics first. You won't be expected to do hill starts straight away.
